Online Improv for Improvisors that Hate Improv Online

By Improv Chattanooga (other events)

5 Dates Through Aug 29, 2020

When the pandemic hit, and the world went into lockdown, Improv bounced back in an unexpected way: It went online! Since then, the internet has been flooded with shows and players from all over the world! Better still, Improvisors are getting to perform and study with people that they never would have met otherwise.

Sadly, not everyone has been able to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. Many improvisors genuinely find performing online uncomfortable at best, or downright impossible at worst.

If you are one of those improvisors, this workshop is for you. We’ll be working to help you overcome the issues you might have with virtual Improv, so that you can rejoin your Improv family and start playing again! (Rest assured, they MISS you.)

In this workshop we will cover:

  • Getting confident with the Software (we’ll use and focus on Zoom, but the concepts are the same for all meeting software)
  • Being yourself on camera.
  • Lighting yourself correctly for a show.
  • Dressing for the gig. (Comfortable, but professional.)
  • How to get physical in the virtual world.
  • “I had this on my desk, so…” (Props? Should you use them?)
  • No laughs? No problem! How to play for an audience of none and put your own energy into a show.

Plus, we’ll put all this to practice by playing several games/forms that have been proven to work on the virtual stage. No fumbling around trying to figure out which games translate well and which ones don’t. (We’ll also do a Long Form or two if time allows.)

Here are the details:

  • The workshop will be led by Steven “Diz” Disbrow of Improv Chattanooga. An early adopter of virtual Improv, Diz has performed in dozens of virtual shows and led multiple roundtables about how to make virtual Improv work.
  • This workshop will be for experienced Improvisors ONLY. (If you are looking for an Intro class, keep your eyes open for our next “Improv Crash Course.”)
  • The workshop will be conducted via Zoom with a link to the workshop sent out the day before.
  • This will be a closed workshop. It will not be broadcast or recorded. So, come join us and be ready to make some mistakes.
  • This workshop will be “Pay What You Can.” (Via PayPal or Venmo)
  • The workshop will start each Saturday in August at 2pm (ET in the USA), and run till 4pm. (Siri, Google or Alexa can tell you what time that is in your part of the world.)
